Evaluation:

I have managed to take all of the pictures that were needed by the deadline, however I have not finished anything else by the deadline.

I didn't meet the writing deadlines because I was slow at first and unsure of the work.

I found the pattern and texture shots the easiest as there was a lot of different examples that I could have taken pictures of around the campus.

I found the extreme shots the hardest as I could not find a large enough clear space to take an image of. I also found the perspective hard as the camera kept focusing on my fingers instead of the background.

My group split into two groups of two and we each went and took different pictures. This allowed us to work through the list a lot quicker and then we swapped images at the end. I worked with Emma, Rebecca and Charlotte.

Video Editing:

This is the first video I have created using adobe Premiere pro. I collected the clips from trailers that I have found on Youtube, I then converted them using a website on the internet and then added them into Premiere Pro. I used the 'I' and 'O' keys to select different parts of the trailers and then dragged the different clips next to each other so that they played side by side. I added some slide transitions to make the video run smoother and I added some audio from The Hunger Games as I felt that the two movies overlapped with their themes so they would co-ordinate well together. I found it hard at first to use the app, however it was easy to learn as most of the procedures I was using were repetitive. I like how the video escalates with the tone of the audio which creates tense effects for the viewers.

Testing Aperture and Shutter Speed

Shutter Speed: 1/8

These 6 images were all taken on the Shutter Speed priority mode. This means that the shutter speed could be altered and the camera would adjust everything else accordingly. The ISO was set at 400. In this image, Emma moved her hands and I took a picture, the image came out with good lighting and her hands had ghost effect which showed her motion very well.

Shutter Speed: 1/16

I doubled the shutter speed and the image had darkened a tiny bit. Emma's hands were moving the same as the image before, however the image did not capture as much motion as the shutter was open for half as much time as before, so there was less time for the movement to be captured.

Shutter Speed: 1/32

The image is now getting progressively less blurry and the image is getting darker. The shutter is open for a lot less time than before which is leaving the image under-exposed as there is less time for the light to enter the camera.

Shutter Speed: 1/64

This image is now capturing a lot less motion than it was in the first image. The majority of the image is now dark.

Shutter Speed: 1/128

The motion is now no longer being captured and Emmas hands are in focus, even though she is still moving them.

Shutter Speed: 1/256

The image is now so dark that Emma can barely be seen. The image is in focus and the motion is not shown anymore.

Aperture: f5.6

Here the aperture is open for a little amount of time. This means that there is less light being able to come into the camera.

Aperture: f11
Aperture: f22

College Promotional Material:

We were given a brief that the college needs promotional images and a video which shows the college environment in a positive way.

To respond to this brief, I first did research Leeds Castle to see how they have promoted their business.

When I opened the Leeds castle website, they had a video on their front page that showed what the castle looked like and some of the activities that were available to visitors. The film was shot on a sunny day which made the castle look inviting. There were links which then took the users to different pages where they could learn more information or sign up to these activities.

Then decided to create a plan of the different shot types I shall use to capture the college. I decided to use: Framed, Rule of Thirds, High, Birds Eye, Low, Medium Shot, Long Shot,  and Point of View. I then used the panning shot type to capture what the college looks like in a video. I worked with Charlotte, Emma, Rebecca and Ads.

These were the images that I have taken, responding to the brief. I feel that the medium shots and the closeup shots respond the best the brief, as they show the college in the best way. My favourite image is the birdseye one looking down the stairs. I like this as there is a small slot that allows the viewer to see down the staircases. I used the lens focus to focus on the foreground, leaving the image to be left unfocused in the background. I took all of these images on Aperture Priority mode, meaning that I adjusted the aperture on the images and the camera adjusted everything else. I feel I have met the brief well enough and have taken some of the promotional skills that Leeds Castle have used, however I feel that some of my images could have a bolder use of colours and better lighting, this would make them more attractive to the viewers.

College Prospectus Video:

This is the college prospectus video that me and my group have created. I like how the upbeat music creates an exciting atmosphere. We took videos of the most interesting places in the college and used smooth transitions to blend one video to another. The shot types we used were panning and zoom. These were effective at showing lots of areas of the college however we could have used a wider variety of shot types to make the video more interesting.

ISO: Changing the definition and grain

ISO: 200 - Least Sensitive to light

ISO: 500

ISO: 320

ISO: 640

Exposure Triangle:

ISO: How much grain there is in the image. The higher the ISO, the more grainy the image will turn out to be.

Shutter Speed: This is how much the shutter is open for. If it is open for a long time, it can capture blur.

Aperture; The aperture controls the depth of field in the image. The larger the aperture, there will be less parts of the image in focus.

How to make a contact sheet:

First open photoshop.

Then go on File -> Automate -> Contact Sheet II

It will then come up with the page to the left.

Check it is using "Folder" and not "Files".

Click choose and then select the folder with the image in.

Click OK and it will generate the contact sheet

To save it click File -> Save As -> and then change it from a PhotoShop Document to a PDF and then save it somewhere sensible.

Testing the White Balance Filter:
This can be changed on the side of the camera. There is a button that says WB and then you press it and use the toggle to change it.

Correcting the Colour Cast:

This was an image that I have taken using the Tungsten setting on the white balance.

This image is not suitable because it has a blue tone to it and it does not look unrealistic.

I opened this using File -> Open.

To change this image, I selected on the circle down the bottom of the page and clicked on Photo Filter. I then dded a warming filter to contrast against the blue hues that are currently in this image. I used the slider to change how thick the orange overlay would be.

File Types:

JPEG: A JPEG is a type of image format. It is a type of lossy compression. When images are taken using JPEG, all of the information is compressed down, however this image cannot be found again. This makes the file type smaller so that its easier to store. The more it is compressed, the more information is lost as it cannot be retained again.

TIF: This is a type of lossless compression. This means that it has a larger file size, as information is not lost during compression. These are useful because they can be edited many times without losing their image quality.

RAW: This image type holds all of the information without compressing it at all. This is useful for producing higher quality images as none of the information would be lost, like in lossy compression. These have the largest file size as they are holding the mot information.

Landscape: Test Shot 1:
Second Landscape Photoshoot:

This is my contact sheet for my first landscape based photoshoo. Below is my favourite image that I have taken out of this shoot. I like this one because it is very contemporary and it is more abstract than regular landscapes. To take this image, I went up to a corner on the college building, angled the camera to the sky and took some images. This is the best one out of a few that i did because it is the most in focus and the corner is the closest to the middle. This image would be better if the tree was not in it, however I was quite lucky that there were no clouds on this day otherwise I think they would have made the image look worse. I like how simplistic this image is.

These are my contact sheets for my landscape shoot around the college. Here there are a mix between traditional and contemporary landscape images.

There are some heavily underexposed and overexposed images in this shoot. This occurred when i went from the outside to the inside or the other way around, and i had forgotten to change the aperture and the shutter speed.

Some of my images also had the wrong white balance, when outside I found that flash corrected that colour, and the auto was easier for when i was inside.

Personally, I found it harder to take traditional images that I was satisfied with. I could not find many inspiring areas to take images of. It was easier for me to take contemporary images as I could use different eye levels, such as worms eye or canted, to take a new approach on the landscapes.

Traditional Landscape Image:
Contemporary Landscape Image:

This is my favourite contemporary landscape image. This is building on the image that I had taken during my test shots. I prefer the clouds in this image, This is because it adds more detail and it makes the image look more complex.

I have also angled this to be slightly different than my previous attempt, This was to eliminate the tree in the background. I also prefer the angle that I have on this image, it means that the building is filling the image more and there is less negative space.

This is my favourite traditional image. I think that there is a good amount of light, and the composition of the image is good. To take this, I used a fast shutter speed, this meant that the image would not be overexposed. I also used a deep aperture so that the majority of the image is in focus. I could have lowered the exposure just a little bit more so that the rest of the detail with the clouds could be seen in the sky. This would improve the image a lot more as the top left hand side of the image is just white.

This was another one of my favourite images, however the image was too yellow. I changed this by loading up photoshop, then clicking on Image -> adjustments -> and then Photo filter. I then added a cooling filter to the image to contrast against the orange that was alread in the image. I used a shallow aperture to just capture the line that was on the floor.

Final Landscape Images:
Final Edited Landscape Images:

These are my final images for the landscape project. Overall, I am very happy with these images.

I feel my contemporary images are a lot stronger than my traditional ones, this is because I prefer more abstract photos and I felt a lot more confident taking the contemporary images.

My favourite traditional landscape image is the one of the front of the main building. I like this image because i contains some nice war hues because of the trees, and it has the idealised and romantic feel that most traditional landscape images have.

My favourite contemporary landscape image is the building one with the blue sky. I like this one be because the and;e makes the building seem a lot bigger and i like the reflection that is given off the windows.

Overall, I feel like I have completed the brief semi - well. I feel like i have completed the contemporary part of this project well, however I need to improve with my traditional landscapes to make them better.

Health and Safety:

Being aware of surroundings: This is important so that you do not fall onto rivers or hurt yourself. To stop this you should check your surroundings before you set up your equipment. It would also risk damaging the equipment which would jeopardise your shoot.

Weather: If shooting outside it is important to check the weather. If it rains, it may damage your camera, or if it is windy then your tripod may fly away. To stop this, check the weather online and consider moving the shoot date to a nicer day.

Theft: Make sure to be aware of your equipment and keep an eye on it if shooting in public otherwise people may steal it. Have insurance on your equipment just in case anything happens to it.

Work/Life Balance: Don't overwork yourself otherwise you will not have any good pictures. Stay hydrated as well or you may get ill.

Make sure to always wear he neck strap and have the lens cap on whenever the camera is not in use as well.

Carbon Copy Project: Outcome

This is my contact sheet for my carbon copy project.  There are some failed images within this photo shoot. The first two were test shots as I was trying to work out what aperture and shutter speed for it to work. Another problem that occurred when i was first starting this shoot is that I was shooting in RAW. This would of made it harder for me to work with these images after the shoot as I have not previously worked in RAW so i would not be comfortable working with it.

I need to edit these images because all of my images will need to be in black and white.

Recreation 1:

This was my first recreation. I used a long exposure time to capture the movement of the head. To make this, I positioned Emma in front of a white background and put the spotlights on her. I didn't put them up very strong because there it doesn't look like there is a very strong light in the image that I am trying to recreate. It took me a while to get the right balance between shutter speed and aperure as some of the images came out too light, too dark, or they didnt have enough movement. The one that worked was 10" and f32. I used a tripod to hold the camera in place.

I then edited this in Photoshop. First I changed it to black and white using the image tab at the top of Photoshop. I the used curves to make brighter whites and deeper shadows. I also uses the highlights and shadows button to just increase the highlights and make them a little bit more bolder.

Final Evaluation for Recreation 1:

Overall, I think that the technique that I have used has recreated this image well, however there are some clear differences to my image and the artists image. The first difference that i have noticed is that the background of the artists image is a brighter white than my one, which is a dull grey. I could have changed this by making it brighter in Photoshop, but then i would risk the rest of the image looking overexposed and losing the details of the face. Another way I could have changed this is adding more spotlights onto the background when taking the image so that it doesn't become grey when i edit it. Another difference is that the model in the artists image is not directly in the centre and they are slightly to the left. this makes it look more aesthetically pleasing than my image because they have used the rule of thirds to align the model with the negative space and it works better than my one. The artists model is also closer to the camera than my one is which shows the movement in more detail. The model in the artists image also has her eyes closed, wheeras in my one emma has her eyes open. i feel like these give off two different moods to the image. The artists image has a peaceful and solemn feel to it, whereas my one doesn't have the same mood as that. In the future, I would like to be able to learn how to make the movement look better in this type of photography.

Recreation 2:

This was my second recreation. I feel like this one was the least successful out of the three.

To take this image I used a 10" shutter speed and the aperture was at f32. This was enough to capture the movement without the image becoming over or under exposed. I used a spotlight to highlight Rebecca from the background. I placed her in front of a black background. I used a tripod to keep the camera still.

I then edited this in Photoshop. I made it black and white, and I then used curves to add highlights and shadows. I added shadows but then I lost the detail in her hair so I used levels to try and bring back the detail, which i feel worked quite well. I then used the highlights to make the light and the darkness a little bit bolder so that Rebecca stuck out more.

Final Evaluation for Recreation 2:

Overall, I feel like i recreated the technique used well, but i don't think that my recreation looks like the artists image. The first difference is that the background of the artists image is a gradient, with the model moving his face towards the light. This uses the rule of thirds and makes the image look fitting and it flows nicely. In my image, there is just a plain black  background, and the model is in the middle. I feel like Rebecca is getting lost within the amount of negative space that is in this image, and her face is not in clear detail in the face, whereas there is in the artists image. If I did this again, I think I would have used a longer shutter speed and moved the camera closer to the face so that the movement of the head can be captured more thoroughly. I would like to learn how to find the rule of thirds grid so that I can make my image more pleasing to the eye.

Recreation 3
Final evaluation for Recreation 3:

This is my last recreation. I took this image using a black background and I used emma as my model.

I used photoshop to make this image black and white. i then used curves to add some highlights and contrast to this image. I also used the brightness and contrast filter to make these brighter. For this image. I used a quicker shutter speed so that no movement was captured.

I positioned emma slightly to the right so that she was looking into the negative space in the image.

Overall, I do not feel like i recreated this image very well. I have used a quicker shutter speed than the previous two images, this made sure that no movement was captured as the artists image is completely still. If i were to retake this image, I would need to move the model the other way around so that she is facing the same way as the previous image. I would also need to add a harsher spotlight onto he model so that the contrast would be a lot brighter. I will also need to place the camera slightly lower than the human eye level so that the camera is looking up at the model instead of straight on at them. I would also need to then edit it to make the highlights and shadows a lot stronger than they currently are in my recreation.

In the future, I would like to learn how to use tripods easily and how to easily find out what shutter speed and apertures will create the different image styles.

Setting up the Studio:

2. These are small reflectors. There will either diffuse, stop or reflect the light depending on the different material on them. There was a shiny silver side, a metallic black side, a matte white side and a shiny gold side. We used the shiny silver to bounce some of the light back onto the backdrop. The matte white would be used to diffuse light like the soft box and the black would absorb and stop the light.

1. First we moved the light boxes so that they were directly on the soft box. They needed to be on the backdrop and not on the models as if they were on us then they would cause a shadow and there wouldn't be a completely clean background. The soft box is used to diffuse the light onto the backdrop so that it was not harsh on the backdrop.

3. This is the setup so far. We have used soft boxes andthe camera in the middle to take the image. The model will stand in the centre of the backdrop and we will take their image when the set up is finished.

4. We then plugged this button into the light. This made the flash work when i pressed the shutter button on the camera.

5. This is the light reader meter. This makes all of the flash work and then tells you what you need to set the camera up as to get a good exposed image.

College tour using different shot types:

This is a video including different shot types that we have shot around the college. The shot types we used were: High, Low, 180 degree rule and panning.

Portrait Project: Responses

This is a contact sheet for one of the six styles of portraits that I am hoping to recreate. To make this one, i followed my cats around and took pictures of them. I took these images in the morning, where there wasn't much natural lighting, which meant that a lot of them had come out as dark or too blurry. I found it hard to take pictures of all of my cats because they never stop moving for me to take a picture of them. It was harder to take a picture of my kittens because they are all black and it was very hard to focus on their faces because the camera couldn't pick it up. I had to use a long shutter speed so that it would pick up as much light as possible from my house, and a shallow aperture so that just my cats faces were in the picture.

I decided to edit a few of my images to see which ones gave me the best results. This image was originally very blurry, this is because I had taken these images whilst there was not much natural light, so i had to have a longer shutter speed so that the image would become exposed. I used the sharpen tool to try and counteract the blur in this image. I then used the vibrancy tool to bring out the colours on her face, and then used the brightness to make the image seem more appealing.

This image was too dark because I used a quick shutter speed so that I wouldn't capture Patch moving around. I used the curves filter in Photoshop to bring some light into the image, and then used the brightness filter to add some more. I then used the vibrancy filter to bring out her colours.I then used a warming filter to add emphasis to the bright colours on her face

This is the last image that I am going to edit. I edited this by using the vibration reduction filter, to minimise any movement that occurred whilst I was taking the images. I then used vibrancy and curves to emphasise Patch's face. I used the rule of thirds in this image so that she is facing the negative space. This makes the image more aesthetically pleasing than if she was in the middle.

I feel like I have successfully made a portrait, similar to the one on the right. Both images are quite soft and homely looking. This is nice because they are pictures of cats and it makes them look cute. In the initial picture, the cat is licking their lips, I could not recreate this because my shutter speed was too long dfor the image to be captured without any additional movement, Both images have a good amount of lighting, however I prefer the initial cats lighting because it looks more brighter and natural than my one, which is heavily edited. I feel like i should have put more emphasis on Patch's eyes as they are the main focal point in the other image, but i was unsure about how to do that.

Recreation 2

This is my contact sheet for my second set of images.I found it very hard to get the right amount of light in these images. I didn't want to use a secondary light source (that wasn't the fairy lights) because i feel like it would lose the glow of the lights around Rebeccas head.  The first set of shots that i did were the blue ones, and the second set were the orange ones. It was hard to make sure that Rebeccas head could be seen in the images because the studio was pitch black.I tried a long shutter speed to let the camera capture as much light as possible, but it became very sensitive to movement and a lot of the images came out slightly blurry. My favourites tyle in this shoot were the really zoomed in ones because it showed the colours of the lights and their glow on rebeccas face and it created a more mystical and magical feel to these images. At first, all of the images had come out pitch black because i had set the shutter speed an aperture too short, so i had to experiment to make this suitable for this shoot.

This is the first image that i am going to edit to see how they come out. I used the curves to bring out the highlights on her face, and then used vibrancy to make the colours of the fairy lights brighter as well. I used a slight warming filter to emphasise the warm and homely feel that this image has. I like how the top half of this image has turned out, however I think this image would be better if there was more light on the models face so that she can be seen easier. There is too much negative space in it and she has kind of been lost with the amount of darkness in the image.

This is my second attempt at editing one of my recreations. I used curves to add some extra brightness to the image, and then used vibrancy to bring out the colours on the models face. I also used a cooing filter to make the cool, mysterious tones in this image a lot stronger. I feel like this image was better than the first one because more of the models face can be seen, but i prefer the warmer tones fairy lights to the cool toned ones. I prefer the mood that the warm lights gave off, they made the image seem inviting and made the model look calmer than the blue lights.

This is the final image that i have edited. I used curves again to make it brighter, and then vibrancy and a warming filter. This imaege is better than the other two because the models entire face can be seen, but the main focal point of the image is still the fairy lights. I would have liked to have been able to get an ultra close up on the lights over the models face, however i could not get close enough with the tripod because i didnt want the images to come out blurry again.

To the left is the final image that i have made, and the original image that i had taken inspiration from. I prefer how the artist had made the lights a lot stronger in the image than my ones were. I attempted to make them brighter in Photoshop, but the more i edited it, the worse they looked. I like how both of the images have very warm tones, and how both of the models look homely and friendly. This creates an inviting feel to the image. This was better than my cool tones test shots because the sharp blues on the models face made her seem cold. If i did this shoot again, i would use multiple different sets of fairy lights so that the light on the model was more apparent and clearer to see.

Recreation 3

This was my second shoot in the studio. At first, the images cam e out too overexposed. That was because i had used two bright spotlights directly on the model and the background, and then the camera couldn't have a long shutter speed with that amount of light. I then turned the spotlights down but the images came out very orange. I changed the white balance so that it would make the images less orange, however i was on the lamp setting on the spotlights so they still had an orange tint to them. Its as hard to get the aperture ans shutter speed rights that the camera would capture the models movement but still have a good exposure on the image. Some of the images came out slightly whiter than the others, this is because there were other flashes happening in the background, so the light had reflected from the other shot onto my images,

This was my favourite image out of my shoot. It was the clearest image. I edited this my adding a cooling filter to counteract the warm hues in this image. I tried to make it black and white, but it did not look as good as in colour. I fond it hard to take the picture with the same hand movements as the initial image.

Overall, I think the technique for this portrait was successful, however i am not very pleased with the overall image. I feel confident with long exposure times, however I do not like the positioning or the colours in this image. If i redid this shoot, I would position the model facing slightly to a corner, and then i would try to zoom in closer on the face so that there is less blank space around the edge of the model. I would also change the Iso to make the image more grainy, and then make it black and white.

Recreation 4

This is my last studio shoot. For this shoot, I placed the model in the centre and then took a picture of them facing forwards, and then slightly to each side. The first image that i took was too overexposed, this was because i still had a lng shutter speed from the previous shoot, so I needed to make it shorter so that there was less light captured. This was an easy shoot to do because i did not need to use any special techniques like the long shutter speed or the underexposure, so the images were okay to use the first time.

These were the two images of the model that I have decided to use. I have only used two images to layer and edit because if there were more than two then i think it would begin too look too messy and the face would be lost from all the editing.

To make this image, I made both of the images above black and white. I then copied one of them and put them above the other image onto a different layer. I then used the select square tool, and i selected some small areas around the picture and then deleted them. I selected areas off the top area, so that when they were deleted, the image underneath would be seen. I mainly did around the models face because the rest of the area was negative space so it would not make any difference if that area had been deleted. I made both images lack and white originally so that it would be less obvious to see the difference between both images.

Overall, i prefer my interpretation of this image more than the original image. i like how it isn't as clear where i have taken parts off her face. In the initial image, there are shadows and lines where the images have been layered on each other, and i dont think that is very effective. If i redid this shoot, i would zoom in closer on the models face so that there was less negative space surrounding her, this would mean that i could add more layers on it because the models face would be larger and easier to see.

Recreation 5

This is my second location shoot. for this one, we went out into a dark forest in college and i wrapped lights around the models face. The first image came out vey blue because i had the wrong white balance on it, it was still set from where i was previously in the studio. The next few images came out overexposed and underexposed. This was because it was hard to find the right balance between the lights on the model and the background light. We went into the darkest corner in the forest so that the lights would shine as brightly as possible. I made the images slightly underexposed because then i could edit it, and the lights would still be brighter than everything else. I used there of thirds in this hoot because the greens of the forest contrast against the bright purples from the fairy lights. I used a shallow aperture so that the background was slightly blurred out.

This was my favourite image out of this shoot. I have edited this image by making the vibrancy stronger on the image, i then added some highlights and shadows to make this image brighter.

Recreation 6

This is my last on location shoot. The first three images were too dark because I did not have any lights on, because I thought that the long shutter speed would try and capture as much light as possible and i did not want it ot become overexposed. I then put the lights in the room on slightly and the images then had a nicer expsure and they were clearer. I got my model to do a few things. The first one was to shake their head, then flip their hair left and right, and then spin around.

To edit this image, i first made it black and white. I then used curves to add more highlights and shadows. I feel that making it black and white, i gave it an eerie and mysterious feel to the image, which was not as present in the unedited picture.

Overall, I prefer the artists image to mine. I prefer how the model is wearing a suit in the image, which means that there is more for the viewers to look at. In my image, the model is wearing all black, which makes my image look boring. There is also designed wallpaper in the background of the artists image, whereas my one is plain. there is too much blank space in my image, and there is nothing really happening in my image, whereas the artists image has different patterns and designs and there is more for the viewers to look at.

Final 6 Images:

These are my final six portrait images. Overall, I am quite happy with these results.

All of these images relate to the theme of identity in different ways. The long shutter speed images (1 and 3) relate to the theme of identity because they are masking the face. In the first image, the model has used their hands to cover their eyes, and in the third image, the face has been masked by the model moving their head quickly.

I used fairy lights for the second and fifth because they create a wispy and magical feel to the images. In the second image, the image is dark which makes it feel mysterious, with the fairy lights on top of the models head being the main light source.

In the fifth image, i edited it so that the models face cannot be clearly seen, and i used different layers of the same model and edited certain areas so that other images could be seen below.

The sixth image is a picture of one of my cats called Patch. She relates to the theme of identity because she is very important to me and i love her lots.

Some of these images where quite hard to do. The first image was hard because i had trouble finding the correct lighting, as a lot of the images came out very yellow or with the incorrect exposure. I had a similar problem with the second image where it was hard to make the image exposed correctly as there was no other source of light apart from the fairy lights. In my test shots for this shoot, all of the images were blurry because i had to use a long shutter speed so that there would be light in the image, but it captured all of the movement from the model and the camera. I did not have many problems with my fifth image, this was because it was just a simple shot and I did not need nothing special from the camera or the lights.

The last image was a little bit hard to take because it was early in the morning and i needed a slightly longer shutter speed so that it would take in the light, but then some of my images were blurry. If I had taken these in the middle of the day then i would not have this problem.
